Many hospitality operators around the country are opening back up with special pricing to attract New Zealanders and some operators even having to open earlier than expected. The Hermitage general manager Jason Winter said the hotel would now open on July 3, instead of September 24, in time for the school holidays.
“Due to the response, and lots of phone calls a day, we have decided to open the Hermitage a lot earlier than we thought.
After months of uncertainty, the ski season will get underway on Friday when Mt Hutt opens its slopes. The impact of the coronavirus means it's going to be a season different to any other, with international travel restrictions having a significant financial effect on ski fields, particularly in the Southern Lakes region. Mt Hutt is popular with Canterbury skiers and was particularly busy on weekends. The move to level 1 means the Canterbury ski field is able to run at capacity, with about 3500 people on the slopes compared to 1800 under level 2.
